Murals & Trompe l'oeil

Janet uses contrast and deep perspective in her murals.  She has painted murals in all genres, but personally prefers the trompe l'oeil style.  Trompe l'oeil is a French word meaning "to trick the eye," a neoclassical fantasy style in which nearly every detail is painted, and the effect can be incorporated into any concept.  When using the trompe l'oeil style, she creates realism that leaves the viewer unsure if the picture is real, or a painting.

"The imagination is a place I like to go and murals allow extremes of space manipulation.  Setting an atmosphere through illusion, you can take the viewer to another dimension and transport them to other worlds.  I love the idea that trompe l'oeil murals, on a grand scale, allow clients and their guests to appear incorporated into the painting itself, simply by standing in front of it."

"The job of the artist is always to deepen the mystery." ~ Francis Bacon

"Spanish Garden Room"  Triptych Mural

Each Panel 7' x 2' 6" - Acrylic on Solid Wood Doors

The client's idea was having a trompe l'oeil bookcase painted on their utility closet doors.  Janet's concern was; "Since the doors are in a passway room that is accessed by opposite entrances, the perspective of books doesn't change as you walk by, so from one viewpoint it would be distorted.  I suggested a design that would move with you, by drawing you into the illusion of another room, and open up the area."  The clients liked that idea, so the artist employed a technique to disguise perspective lines and make the scene change at various viewing angles.  The moulding and "glass" are painted illusions on solid wood.

"Colors On Main" - Wall Mural

12' x 19'  Acrylic and Latex on Sheetrock

The owner of an upscale women's clothing store wanted a wall mural that would compliment her merchandise.  The artist suggested painting fashion models on a runway, using the style of Louis Icart, since the store also sells his prints.  You can see the mural wall through the store window, since the store is on the corner of a busy intersection, so the arttist suggested painting the models on a life-size scale to help draw in clientele, by creating the illusion of a fashion show.

"Earth Rise"  Wall Mural

8' x 16' Acrylic and Latex on Sheetrock

This client requested the artist come up with "a design that would grow with their son and still be something he would enjoy as a teenager."  Janet chose space and planets, as they are timeless, and anyone of any age is in awe of that image of earth from the moon.  The head of the boy's bed was placed near the electrical wall outlet (shown uncovered) and it's as though he sleeps on the moon!

"French Door" - Pocket Door

7' x 3' 6" Acrylic on Solid Wood Pocket Door

The site for this mural was a pocket-door leading to a laundry room.  Since the hallway is viewed from the foyer of the home, the client wanted something bright and colorful to make this area look less of a dead end.  Janet designed the trompe l'oeil look of a garden, viewed through (faux) glass, to open up the area.  Even the wood molding between the painted faux glass panels is an illusion, convincing the eye to believe it is a french door.

"Chevies Bar"

5' x 8' Automotive Paint on Mirror

Janet was asked to paint three classic cars on mirrors installed behind the bars in a popular 50's style barr & grille.  Only the corvette is painted on the mirror, everything you see around it is a reflection of the interior of the night club.

"Planets & Moons"

3' x 6' each panel - Acrylic on Board

This mural is painted on a three-panel folding screen, and shows planets in our solar system.  The entire screen has a background of deep space, giving focus to the colorful planets.  The use of artist's acrylic lends itself to making the planets and moons appear to glow.
